Motorola Dealer ANCOM Communications, Inc. Acquires Rochester-Based Whitewater Wireless to Expand Two-Way Radio Presence in Southern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin
BURNSVILLE, Minn. (August 1, 2016) — ANCOM Communications Inc., a sales, service and rental dealer of Motorola two-way radios, announces the acquisition of Rochester-based Whitewater Wireless, Inc. and the opening of a new branch office in Rochester. The purchase, completed on July 1, joined two Motorola Channel Partners to offer a stronger team presence throughout southern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin. Terms were not disclosed.
“This transaction was mutually beneficial for both organizations, allowing ANCOM to expand its reach to customers outside the Twin Cities metro area while helping four of the six Whitewater partners to make a natural exit into retirement,” said David Anderson, ANCOM’s president. “Our larger pool of expertise and closer proximity to customers allows us to better serve Rochester and the surrounding region, especially mission-critical public safety departments,” he said. Two remaining Whitewater partners, Rollie Frank and Lee Smith, continue to work in the new branch office in sales and contracts. Along with the other former Whitewater employees who have joined ANCOM, the combined organization has 40 employees.
ANCOM’s Rochester branch office is currently working out of the former Whitewater Wireless location at 1929 2nd Street NW. A new office location is planned to open this fall at 4871 19th Street NW. Other key cities to benefit from the expanded presence include La Crosse, Winona, Red Wing, Faribault and Austin. Any business where two-way communications are vital can benefit from ANCOM’s product and service offerings and expertise. Besides public safety, fire and emergency departments, other market users in need of increased safety, security and efficiency include education, hospitals and medical facilities, transportation, utility, construction, manufacturing, farm operations, retail and hospitality.
Since 1991, ANCOM Communications Inc. has provided two-way radio expertise to the Midwest area. ANCOM’s portfolio has expanded to include the sale of systems of various complexities, starting with the a few portable radios, or a base station and mobile radios. Complete systems are available for large campuses and wide-area coverage involving multiple campus locations in a metro area. ANCOM’s certified technicians install and service all products sold and offer maintenance contracts tailored to customer needs. ANCOM also offers rental radio options for all types of event venues such as festivals, marathons, tournaments, conventions and racing events.

Whether you want to eliminate dead zones or expand coverage to remote locations, count on the SLR 1000. Compact, easy to install, and designed to work indoors or out, it’s built to grow as your needs do.

As your organization grows, the SLR 1000 can grow with it. It works with both conventional and trunking systems supporting voice and data, so moving to a bigger system won’t always require buying a bigger repeater.

First responders, public works employees, and other professionals know that shifts aren’t getting any shorter. Thankfully, you can keep your people connected even longer. IMPRES 2 batteries deliver higher capacity without an increase in size. All IMPRES 2 batteries share the same IP68 rating as APX radios, which means they can be fully submersed in two meters of water for up to four hours. Designed with a rugged housing, they’re as tough as the radios they power. IMPRES 2 batteries, when combined with an IMPRES 2 charger, deliver 60% more charging cycles than traditional Lithium Ion batteries.

You can create wide area coverage and automatically roam from one coverage area to another with no manual intervention. Or you can enhance coverage at a single site like a high-rise building that contains physical barriers. IP Site Connect enables you to extend the voice and data communication capability of your workforce beyond the levels two-way radio has achieved before. This means dramatically improved customer service and increased productivity.
FMCSA & PHMSA COMMERCIAL DRIVER CELL PHONE BAN
Mobile Phone Restriction Rule For Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers
The FMCSA and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) have published rules specifically prohibiting interstate truck and bus drivers and drivers who transport placardable quantities of hazardous materials from texting or using hand-held mobile phones while operating their vehicles. The joint rules are the latest actions by the U.S. Department of Transportation to end distracted driving. Violations can result in fines and/or driver disqualifications and will impact a motor carrier’s and/or driver’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) results.
Overview And Background
The FMCSA rule restricts the use of all hand-held mobile devices by drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). This rulemaking restricts a CMV driver from holding a mobile device to make a call, or dialing by pressing more than a single button. CMV drivers who use a mobile phone while driving can only use a hands-free phone located in close proximity.
Fines, Penalties, And Disqualification
Using a hand-held mobile phone while driving a CMV can result in driver disqualification. Penalties can be up to $2,750 for drivers and up to $11,000 for employers who allow or require drivers to use a hand-held communications device while driving. Multiple violations of the prohibition of using a hand-held mobile phone while driving a CMV can result in a driver disqualification by FMCSA. Multiple violations of State laws prohibiting use of a mobile phone while driving a CMV is a serious traffic violation that could result in a disqualification by a State of drivers required to have a Commercial Drivers License.
